Flannel - how does it do it?

Posted on Dec 23, 2009 10:43 by wlwaugh

I'm at home enjoying a few days of well deserved time off. Since I'm a responsible, contributing member of the team at 1578 Merit Ln, I'm doing a little housework.  I'm finally breaking out the flannel sheets for the bed when my mind wanders onto a question that must be answered - A conundrum that has baffled the brightest minds throughout history - So here it is - Riddle me this Batman - why is it that flannel sheets feel immediately warmer than the standard variety "summertimer" bed sheets.  I understand the idea that the weave of the fabric traps more body heat than the others, and that explains why they are warmer over a perdiod of time - but why do they feel immediately warmer when you hop into bed?  The flannel fabric itself is not resting at a higher temperature than the Sateen sheets - so why does it instantly feel warmer?  It boggles the mind.

Oh my. I think that the silky 4 million thread count Egyptian cotton you must be currently using during the summer feels cooler because it's smoother. And the flannel... well it's fuzzy and subconsciously that feels warmer even if really they are the same temp. But really... I don't have a clue.
